Breaking Free from Obsessions and Compulsions

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by two main parts – a pattern of obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are unwanted, intrusive and distressing thoughts, urges, or images. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts done to reduce anxiety or prevent something bad from happening. The individual may feel relief from the compulsions at first, but in reality they cause more anxiety and distress. Even though the person recognizes these thoughts or behaviors as excessive or unreasonable, they often feel unable to stop. Common Characteristics may include:

  • Fear of contamination (germs, dirt, chemicals).
  • Intrusive thoughts about harm, violence, or taboo subjects.
  • Intense need for symmetry, order, or exactness.
  • Fear of making a mistake or forgetting something important.
  • Excessive handwashing, cleaning, or checking.
  • Repeating actions a specific number of times.
  • Arranging or ordering objects in a precise way.
  • Mental rituals (repeating phrases, counting, or “canceling” thoughts).
